The 'World-Spirits Award 2011'

A survey has revealed that the 'World-Spirits Award' (WSA) is considered to be the best and highest award on offer by industry insiders and is highly regarded as such.

- The Jury & Academy: no award comes with a more educated jury than the WSA as part of the 'World-Spirits Academy'. Only those who have been trained as testers by the WSA and undergone positive checks can secure themselves a place on the jury - participants from other competitions as well as recognised specialists all have to start their training with the WSA from the starting blocks.

- The assessment system: to ensure as objective an assessment as possible, symbols instead of points are used primarily. The WOB system, based on five assessment criteria and characteristics each, enables transparent and traceable results. Verbal descriptions are available in German and English.

History/Fascinating Facts

There is documented evidence of a 'forerunner' to Armagnac existing as long ago as 1461. The Armagnac tradition is based on 3 main cultures: the Romans (knowledge of wine-growing), the Gauls and the Celts (production of barrels) in addition to the Arabs and Moors (art of distillation). Subsequent trade links with the Netherlands ensured that Armagnac achieved widespread renown. When restrictions on wine transportation were introduced on the Garonne and a prohibition on wine selling was introduced in Bordeaux, there was a move towards distilling the wines of Gascony to make them suitable for storage. Distillery techniques were improved in the mid-19th century and the trade in Armagnac brought affluence to the region.
